I watched the game last night and it is truly an inspiration!

As a Asian, a Taiwanese American, who with full understanding the background culture and seeing what’s happening with Lin… I so can relate!

The key is “confident”. We (Taiwanese) are used to be told to do things. We are told to hide yourself and stay low. Be average and no surprise. No drama and be normal.

Skilled and talented just need a chance to show what we can do… A little help to ignite our confident is all that it takes to set off a wildfire. Plus a chance to lead, it will be transformational…

When I was a kid, Chinese New Year eve is the day that we can have lots of fun with firecrackers, not the firecrackers kids play now a day, I am talking about some weapon grade firecrackers!

The kind which you can plug into a small hole in brick wall and blow a big hole out of it!

Not sure how it was ever legal but it sure was lots of fun… Maybe its all part of the (Taiwanese) government training program to get us ready at young age in case of the China invasion… I didn’t know how to speak English back then or else… “fire in the hole”

And In one of my recent conversation with my boss, Bruce, he also indicated to me that my orientation is always trying to jump to solve the problems when what he needed from me is to stratgize with him. He also clearly indicated to me that he needs me not to think that every first solution I come up with is always going to work… keep my mind open.

Think back, I realize I have put so much unnecessarily pressure on myself to find the right answer when I all really need at the time was to be curious and ask questions!

This is a profound moment for me and so I have translated this Q&A post by Seth along with my comments and learning into, I created this post, “你會問「問題」嗎？”, on my Chinese blog, Note.com.tw.

Watched this movie on Christmas eve and it reminds me an event in early 2008… In 2008, I was handling the risk valuation system that valuates my company’s gas portfolio. One day, some strategists made a mistake on one of the (option) valuation formula and push the the update out… Then post the mid-day calc we realize the number doesn’t look right.

Late that evening and into early morning the next day, we were on the phone with people from both Baltimore and Houston office (including the managing director of the gas trading floor from Houston). 2 am, we found the problem and I still remember the managing director said, explicit toward to me, “David, our VAR from the mid-day calc is billion dollars off. And I need you to be in Houston office by 8:00!”… that moment, I felt like throwing up… Anyway, long story short, we got the number/position corrected before the market open in the morning. All was good and no… no one got fired.

Hitting the reset button tonight…

Tomorrow is a brand new start, let’s try to change the world again!

For tomorrow…

Need to split the team to 2, one focus on the mass and one focus on the c&i.

Get IT to start on the customerPortal (widget based fx) framework and focus on the data needed for the first 4 “modules”…

Get product team together on EPIC spec and let’s just fucking do it…

Detail out the first batch of web innovation tasks and get IT to commit some dates…

This is based on an actual event…

First of all, I, myself is a Chinese (actually, a Taiwanese) so this post meant no disrespect to my follow Chinese comrades.

Second, most of Chinese, me included, can’t pronounce the “th” sound and we usually pronounce “th” like “s”…

so, let’s the story begin… the Monday after the Thanksgiving holidays, one of my Chinese colleague, Gordon, who usually speaks very loudly, picked up a phone at his cubical and was, very obviously, having a Thanksgiving related conversation…

Gordon talked to his phone very loudly and said…

Hey… How was your Sex-giving party?

My Sex-giving was awesome!

I had lots of fun during the Sex-giving! But it was very tiresome!

I had lots people came over to my Sex-giving party and I had to spend hours afterward to cleanup…

Yup… Seriously… And I am not kidding… he was loud and I was worried for him, was thinking he better hangup the phone or some HR is gonna get his ass…
